Ice skating in Munich

There are five very different places where skating in Munich is just the most beautiful experience!

It's just around the corner: that time of the year when the temperatures slowly decrease and you can almost smell the approaching winter. While some now wistfully mourn the end of last summer, others can hardly wait for the temperatures to finally drop below freezing. Because then it’s time to pull out the skates and get on the ice again! Fortunately, the Bavarian capital doesn’t have a lack of ice rinks, stadiums and waters where you can take a few laps as long as you like. But there are five very different places where skating in Munich is just the most beautiful experience:

Insiders’ tip for ice skating in Munich: Schlitterclub at Waisenhauskessel

The most magnificent backdrop for skating in Munich is probably at Nymphenburg Palace. At sufficiently frosty temperatures, the Nymphenburg channel and especially Waisenhauskessel, which is located at its eastern end, turn into a true paradise for all Munich ice sports enthusiasts. If the slippery ice surface looks suspicious to you at any point, you can simply wander through the wintry palace garden and enjoy a hot mulled wine or a tasty treat on the Schlitterclub trailer (which actuates the ice surface at Waisenhauskessel).

The absolute classic: ice magic at Stachus

On 23 November, the transformation will finally happen: Stachus in the heart of the city will turn into a magical winter wonderland again. Where kids play at the fountain during summer, a huge skating rink is set in the winter – a place where grown-ups and kids can merrily enjoy ice skating. Every year, different events, activities, a delicacy takeaway, and the famously infamous hot mulled wine stands draw innumerable visitors and make ice skating in the heart of Munich undoubtedly one of the highlights during the cold season.

For those who like to go a little faster: Eis- und Funsportzentrum Ost

Those who think that Stachus is too crowded and that the ice skaters at the Nymphenburg channel are too easy-going, will find the perfect place to skate in Munich at Eis- und Funsportzentrum Ost. In addition to a classic skating rink, there is a 400-meter long speed skating track – which is by the way the only one in Munich. Here, skaters, who like to go fast, can dash across the ice to their heart’s content and burn out themselves.

Hot-cold combination: ice skating at Prinzregentenstadion in Bogenhausen

Prinzregentenstadion in Bogenhausen came up with a very special ice skating idea: a stadium pass called “Ice and Heat”. The open-air ice rink with music and floodlighting at Prinzregentenstadion in Bogenhausen guarantees pure ice skating pleasure. But that's not all what “Prinze” - as it is called by locals - has to offer. Those who suffer from cold toes after a few laps on skids, are invited to warm up in the 1.300 m2 Prinzregentenbad sauna area and enjoy the hot tub, the steam room or the Finnish sauna. An ice rink and a sauna palace – this is a hot-cold combination which is one-of-a-kind in Munich.

Olympia-Eisstadion: sporty and active skating in Munich

All of those, who decide to buckle up their ice skates at Olympia-Eissportzentrum, can look forward to a couple of sporty and active hours. In addition to the standard public skating rink, which is often accompanied by music and a great light show, there is also a special sports programme for elderly people and a training hall for figure skating. The highlight: If you want, you can take free private lessons from professional educators who will train you the latest free skating elements. So you will surely leave a deep impression on every ice rink in the city.
